Daftne Sanchez

At the University of Central Florida, Daftne studied Social Work with a Victim Advocacy certificate, completed a Home Health Aide credential, and earned an internship with Paving The Way Foundation. Her campus and community roles included Dominican Students Association president and NAACP committee leadership; she also worked as a lead pre-kindergarten teacher.

Read full profile

WeAreFLU Profile: Daftne in the UFCF - FLU Class of 2018 is a proud Trojan and is a Social Work major with a certificate in Victim Advocacy at the University of Central Florida. Recently, Daftne was selected for an Internship with Paving The Way Foundation, Inc. and has received a certification as a Home Health Aide (HHA) from Southern Tech Institute. At UCF Daftne exemplifies the traits of a servant leader as she has transitioned into several campus leadership roles such as President of the Dominican Students Association and Chair for Education and Secretary for the NAACP. Additionally, Daftne has the privilege to serve as a Lead Pre-K Teacher for La Petite Academy.

Daftne we know life at the University of Central Florida can be amazing please share with us some recent accomplishments! Let me start by saying this, time waits for no one. We must be equipped with the tools to be problem-solver in order to navigate through society. There is no such thing as a genie. You must lose the savior mindset and stop making excuses. Life is truly what YOU make it. A year ago, my mind was a fog and I became hopeless due to the pandemic. I had no idea what I was doing. A year ago, I had no idea I would have the opportunity of interning for a local non-profit organization that fights to dismantle child trafficking, tutoring children in my community, and even gain my certification as a Home Health Aide (HHA) in the process all while being a college student. Every accomplishment is an opportunity to create more!

Daftne how did Future Leaders United, if at all, prepare you for or propel you towards this achievement of becoming an intern with paving the way foundation and receiving various industry-related certifications? Who would have thought 3 years worth of my investment and participation in F.L.U that the resources, connections, and tools are still useful to me in my third year of college? There is absolutely no way I would have become the young woman that I am becoming! The truth is, I have learned more than what I have learned throughout my academic years in education. The funny part is, even as an Alumni, every time I find myself participating in the program, I still manage to learn something new. I am a better leader, student, and an improved version of myself because of the foundation that I was grounded in.

What are some other accomplishments that you have achieved while attending the University of Central Florida?

Became a Certified Volunteer Advocate for Children (VAC) in Orange County for The Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association.

Became Certified for Youth Mental Health by National Council for Behavior Health

Became Certified for First Aid Assistance by National Council for Behavior Health

Appointed to serve as Secretary for a UCF organization called "Knights For Social Justice" (KSJ).

President of the Dominican Student Association

Community Service Chair of the Dominican Student Association

Education/Juvenile Justice Chair for the UCF NAACP

WeAreFLU Profile: Cherard in the UFCF - FLU Class of 2018 is a proud Trojan and is a Criminal Justice major with a certificate in Victim Advocacy at the University of Central Florida. Recently, she was inducted into the Delta Zeta Omega chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon Criminal Justice Pre-Professional Fraternity and was selected as a Conference Assistant with UCF Housing and Residence Life. Cherard is expected to graduate from UCF in Spring 2022.

Cherard we know life at the University of Central Florida can be amazing please share with us some recent accomplishments! This past Spring semester (Spring’21) of my Senior year, I became officially initiated into the Delta Zeta Omega chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon Criminal Justice Pre-Professional Fraternity here at UCF!💙🕸. Furthermore, this past May I was officially hired to work as a Conference Assistant for this summer with UCF Housing and Residence Life!

How did Future Leaders United, if at all, prepare you for or propel you towards this achievement of becoming a member of Lambda Alpha Epsilon?: Future Leaders United instilled the pride and motivation to go after all that I desire and want to improve myself academically and to be able to have a foot in the door later on I’m the future when I graduate from UCF. All the guests who entered that classroom and shared their life stories, from upbringing to their present-day successful careers encouraged me that no matter the obstacles I encounter in life and within my education, I can and will persevere to make progress because hard work always pays off in the end. I worked hard to complete all the requirements asked of me by the executive board of my fraternity and my showing up and making an effort helped me to become an official member as well as to be awarded being the “Social Butterfly” at our Spring formal event for interacting with them all the time.

To further expand on your achievements at UCF and the impact Future Leaders United had on you, how did this program prepare you to become a Conference Assistant with the University Housing? Future Leaders United instilled so much love, support, and encouragement to go after anything I desire. This program brought about so much positivity and inspiration in my academics and has pushed me to strive for greatness. FLU allowed me to be my authentic self and to be of service to others in my community. Due to this, I was part of a selected few out of so many UCF students chosen for this position and I am truly grateful that they saw something in me. I’m glad to be able to be of service to UCF residents and non-UCF residents. Thank you FLU family for all that you have done for me and will continue to do!💙💛

What Are You Studying: Legal Studies

Describe your recent success in detail.: Our plans that we make for ourselves, are nothing in comparison to what God has planned out for us. We live in a world where we easily give up when things do not go as we wish or hope for. Last year, I was that individual - in a place where I struggled to accept that what happens to me is not because of me, it's FOR me. Once I’ve accepted that, everything else falls in place.

During my first semester at the University of Central Florida (UCF), the first three months of my membership of attending a UCF organization called "Knights For Social Justice" (KSJ), I was appointed the position of Secretary. Within the same time frame, I ran for another position called, "Community Service Chair" for the newly chartered organization called, "The Dominican Student Association" (DSA). Two months later, I applied for a position for The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) chapter. Based upon my interview, they determined that I would be the perfect fit for the cabinet level position, "Education/Juvenile Justice". Two months later today, I received an email of my acceptance as a certified Volunteer Advocate for Children (VAC) in Orange County for "The Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association". Recently I have received news of being featured among students of University of Central Florida (UCF) from Pine Hills from the Legal Studies department. I am overall, excited to see what the year has left for me.

Daftne participating in March For Our Lives in Washington, DC alongside her fellow FLUITES.

How did Future Leaders United, if at all, prepare you for or propel you towards this achievement?: I am very grateful to be apart of a program that has guided me and my peers to fulfill our goals in life. There are far too many reasons why Future Leaders United has became such a popular subject among our community .For the most part, I was remotely a quiet individual with a lot to say! In the beginning I’ve lacked leadership skills and did not understand why I had to perceive myself as such a leader. Although I quickly realized that in any occupation you pursue, you’ve must have the qualities of a leader to do what you must successfully. Fortunately, FLU provided me with all the tools that I needed to become just that, a leader. I was selected to serve as the FLU Ambassador and with the work I did I was selected to serve as the President of the Youth Advisory Board. Youth Advisory Board is the very 1st of its kind in Orange County, FL Government's Children and Family Services Division - Community Action Centers (Pine Hills Location) this Youth Advisory Board was established to advise the center on its programming and brings valuable youth perspectives to the center. Advising for programs through shared decision-making to transform and create positive change in Orange County. Creating free youth-driven programming through workshops, training, and community outreach focuses on topics such as but not limited to financial literacy, drug/violence prevention, job preparedness, the importance of voter education, and the importance of knowing our rights.

I have to admit, the best part of being molded into a leader was being able to be myself. I didn’t have to be someone else to be accepted as such. Throughout the program, as students we were always introduced or revisited by special guests that have come to share with us their stories of their success and have always left us, including myself, a drive to improve ourselves and a thirst for more knowledge. We’ve had plenty of opportunities to attend events and trips such as ‘March For Our Lives’ in Washington D.C the previous year. That was an eye-opener and most importantly, a sign for me to hold on to my vision I have for myself and for our society. There’s always something to look forward to every Tuesday that we meet. Not once have I walked in and have questioned my presence in the room. Myself and other Fluites were always shown recognition and support for our voices. Our voices mattered. We were all in a room and when we spoke, we were heard. Through these experiences I have been taught the value of making connections, relationships, communication, and most importantly the value of unity in a community.

Daftne and her younger sister Alexandra

Anything else you would like us to know about yourself or your accomplishment?: My success, my heart’s desire and my passion has a lot to do with my upbringing. I’ll let you in on a situation I have not shared with the public. At the moment, and for quite some time, I have been the provider for my family. My mother continues to inspire me to keep going despite the predicament she is in. My younger sister inspires me to never give up on myself no matter how challenging life is. The truth is, I was expected to act mature as an adult but was forced to keep quiet about things no child shouldn’t have. One of the best things I loved while attending Evans was community service and meeting Ms. Sandra Fatmi. Whether it was painting murals, on campus, helping set up community events such as the Taste of Pine Hills, or even attending our monthly Pine Hills Community Council Meetings those experiences have shaped me to become humble, caring and also resourceful to others. Ms.Sandra Fatmi has became more than a mentor, she’s my second mom and continues to support me and my endeavors. I hope to one day share my stories with the world to show them that even when it feels like it’s the end of the world, tomorrow is a new beginning.

Future Leaders United Secretary 2018-2019

Grand Canyon University

Graduating Class: 2019

Attending: Grand Canyon University

Major: Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Email: Sandrapetitfrere14@gmail.com

Describe your recent success in detail.: My recent success was that I graduated high school with honors and with a 4.5 weighted GPA. I have the honor to attend an out of state college without paying out of state tuition and out of 5 of my moms kids I will be the FIRST to attend an out of state college and the first to major in Nursing.

How did Future Leaders United, if at all, prepare you for or propel you towards this achievement?: To begin with, I was able to participate in one of THE best after school programs at Evans High School. F.L.U has helped me in so many ways. For example, they opened my eyes to the bigotry and hatred that is going around in my community. I was able to meet influential people such as Governors, Mayors, Doctors, Rappers, and I was able to go to networking events. Lastly, F.L.U gave me scholarship that will help me further my education in this institution.

Anything else you would like us to know about yourself or your accomplishment?: One thing I have learned about myself was to NEVER judge a book by its cover because you never know who that person is and how that person will be able to help you in the near future. I was taught how to not always put myself first because sometimes it comes off as selfish.
